重厚な厚みを持つ座面と脚部を組み合わせながら、それぞれの位置をあえて少しずらすことで、スツールという機能的な枠を越え、オブジェとしての存在感を持たせています。
着想の源となったのは、米国コロラド州を拠点に活動するビジュアルアーティスト、マイケル・グラブ氏による「Rock Balancing」。川辺にある石を一つひとつ積み上げ、絶妙なバランスで成立させる作品です。現在では米国テキサス州で大会が開催されるほど広く知られています。グラブ氏はこの行為を「瞑想に近い行為」と表現しています。
Balancing Stoolもまた、均整の取れた形ではなく、わずかなズレや不均衡の中に独自のバランスを見出しています。
スツールとして座ることはもちろん、壁面に寄せて壁を背もたれとして使用することで、椅子のような使い方も可能です。
その姿や使い方は、持ち主に委ねられています。
By combining a substantial, thick seat with the legs—and deliberately offsetting their positions slightly—the design transcends the functional boundaries of a stool to take on the presence of a work of art.
The inspiration for this design came from “Rock Balancing” by Michael Grab, a visual artist based in Colorado. This art form involves stacking stones found along riverbanks one by one to create structures of exquisite balance. It has become so widely known that competitions are now held in Texas. Grab describes this activity as “an act akin to meditation.”
The Balancing Stool, too, does not rely on a perfectly symmetrical form but finds its own unique balance within subtle shifts and imbalances.
While it can certainly be used as a stool, it can also be placed against a wall and used as a chair, with the wall serving as a backrest.
Its appearance and usage are left entirely up to the owner.
